No Religious Kingdom: Celebrating Secularism in Nepal
Hurray! Nepal Is A Secular Country
UWB Photo blog by Shruti Shrestha

Yes, amendments must be made in general knowledge books around the world. The world’s only Hindu Kingdom is a history now and people of Nepal, that country, are happy! Hindus are happy, Buddhists are happy, Muslims are happy, Christians are happy, people from different ethnic communities in Nepal are happy. As the parliament passed a historic resolution making Nepal a secular nation, celebrations started on the main street in front of Singha Durbar, the administrative center of Nepal, where parliament is located.
Look Who Is Smiling?

You can’t hide a smile: A Nepali woman from ethnic community smiles as she watches people celebrating in front of Singha Durbar after the parliament passed a historic resolution making Nepal a secular country.

People took out rally in front of Singha Durbar celebrating the secularism in Nepal
Making Their Voice Heard

Earlier in the day hundreds of people, many of them associated with different ethnic community, gathered in front of Singha Durbar with banners to pressurize the government to declare Nepal a secular country.

People putting flags over the statue of Prithvi Narayan Shah that was vandalized a day before while protesting against the government and parliament’s slow speed in declaring the parliament a supreme organization.

It’s going to be sort of strange not referring to Nepal as a Hindu Kingdom. But Nepal has a lot of different ethnicities who practice different religions. So for Nepal to be truly democractic it only makes sense for it to be secular.
I wonder how long it will be a ‘kingdom’?
Hurrah!
Long live the secular, free, equal democratic (republic?) of Nepal! These are days of some greatness!
Secularism is the best thing ever happened to Nepal, it was long overdue.
How can one traslate the name of the government in English ? Nepal Government or Government of Nepal or Nepalese Government ?
Some other names to be changed :
Royal Nepal Airlines Corporation
RONAST
Royal Chitwan National Park
Royal Bardia National Park
Royal Suklaphant Wildlife Reserve…
got some more ?
Government of Nepal sounds just fine. Also no more official prayers to Lord Pashupatinath (or Kirateshwar as we Kirats call him)!
Royal Stag whiskey..it should be referred to as Nepal Stag now. lol
I don’t think referring to Nepal as a secular Kingdom will be strange. What used to be strange was whenever we introduce our country to tourists we say “Nepal where Lord Gautam Buddha was born and it is only Hindu country in the world”. That didn’t used to make any sense.
NOw i think every religion, ethnic groups will be happy except some extremist Hindu like BJP in india.
So, Now that Nepal is no longer a hindu nation, does that mean that cow can be slaughtered openly ?
Good question DA and good point Better Nepal. I am quite fond of beef! Big Mac!
Two years from now there will be a violent movement to make Nepal again a Hindu country. Just like the Shiv Sena, Bajrang Dal and the VHP, there will be similar outfits in Nepal also. India is secular because it has Hindus in the majority. Nepal was secular because Hindus here are tolerent. Now, I doubt whether HIndus will remain tolerant when cows will be slaughtered in their neighborhood.
sajana really? So democracy goes out of the window when religious bias walks in through the door? Ofcourse being secular doesn’t mean being anti-Hindu, I am sure you understand that? It only relfects the fact that the Nepali people practice different religions and are free to do so.
I found this report intereting: Lets go and rally around.
“Victory rallies” around the country, Demo outside Singha Durbar
Reports say supporters of the Seven Party Alliance have taken out “victory rallies” in various parts of the country welcoming the “historic” proclamation passed by the House of Representatives that has drastically curtailed royal powers and brought the army—for the first time in the country’s history—under the control of the legislature, among others.
Rallies have been taken out in Kathmandu, Bara, Sarlahi, Dolakha and Baglung districts, among others. People came out to the streets, greeted each other and chanted pro-democracy slogans.
People could be soon glued to their radio and TV sets as the state-run Radio Nepal, Nepal Television, Kantipur TV and a number of F. M. radio stations carried live the proceedings of the reinstated House of Representatives from Singha Durbar Thursday afternoon.
In front of Singha Durbar – the main government secretariat– despite fresh ban imposed by the local administration over procession, gherao, meetings, sit-in etc., hundreds of people gathered near the statue of late King Prithvi Narayan Shah in order to draw the attention of lawmakers who were meeting inside the House of Representatives.
People representing various indigenous groups, unions, institutions and the civil society were present during the demonstration cautioning political parties not to betray the spirit of the people’s movement 2006.
Addressing the public gathering in front of the West Gate of Singha Durbar—a restricted area– leader of the pro-Maoist student body, ANNFSU (Revolutionary), Lekhnath Neupane, challenged the present government not to undermine the Maoist contribution in restoring citizen’s rights in the country. “ If the present government fails to address the people’s sentiment then they will have to face unforeseen consequences,” he warned.
Neupane said the government should immediately address the issue of hundreds of captured and missing Maoist cadres who played important role in the people’s movement. He also demanded that the parliament should not spare a single moment on declaring country a secular state.
Women’s rights activist, Dr. Renu Raj Bhandari, warned the current government not to repeat the same mistake made by all the previous government of denying women from their basic rights and not granting them appropriate opportunity in decision making.
Interestingly, the gathered crowd took no time to shoo away as soon as the news of country being declared the secular state flashed out of the parliament. A leader of the civil society movement, Malla K Sunder, announced the news for the gathered public outside Singha Durbar.
Talking to Nepalnews after the declaration of the country as a secular state, one of the members of the indigenous communities, Dandu Sherpa, said that the declaration was just a first step towards a democratic Nepal based on equality.
The participants were euphoric as soon as they heard about the HoR proclamation that made sweeping changes in the country’s constitution.
In the west, I can go to any church while my girlfriend cant go to Pashupatinath as she is not hindu.
THIS IS NOT FAIR. There should be introduction fee and everyone should be able to go to the temple.
I wouldn’t want a cow slaughetered in my neighbourhood, that will surely offend millions of hindu living in nepal. Though we have become a secular country but we cannot forget our tradition and values. But we should also be aware of groups like Shiv sena , bajrang Dal of indya who have shown there presensce in nepal too. They will certainly not accept this secular movement.Since king of nepal is also considerded as leader of whole hindus of world so these groups will really try to create some disturbance in nepal as they have been doing for ages. We nepalese are happy that nepal is a Secular state. Hindus in nepal are tolarant but indians are not. They will not accept it. They fill like Nepal must be hindu state because it will be in indya’s favour. Indian government have always supported King, they will surely have problem accpeting Maoist. We may have won battle inside our country but we have a long way to keep indya away from our intenal matter. Even though Indya is considered our big brother but they have no right to put there nose in our matter. Most Indians think that all this revolution of nepal was planned by ISI of pakistan to make nepal a secular state so that they can overthrow indian hindu mentality. These people are really some kind of idiots. We have to beware of these groups too… And lastly I dont want religious conflicts in Nepal. We have seen lots of war. Let peace be on Nepal.
Jai nepal
I am a Muslim please dont take my comment in any wrong sense. I am a nepali first then a Muslim
Well people, how about 90 % of people those who practice vedic culture, values and norm. Girija is one of devil of Nepal since early 1990.
Just await few month, Bihari will enter your home and celebrate in your house.
Some thoughts on secularism:
I am a proud Hindu but never liked the idea of declaring the country a Hindu kingdom. I have equal respect to all other faiths and I feel near to god while respecting other religion.
What we have best in Nepal is religious harmony. So instead of talking about allowining the killing of cow, I say, lets ban all killings restricted by all religions that are practiced in Nepal.
We have to be extra careful about ultra-religious Hindu and Muslim organizations. We have to be careful about Christian missionaries. No religious transformation, at leat not forcefully or by using money.
Religion is a private thing and lets practice it privately. Lets not show it. After all, we have just become secular.
Good on you Tajim. A Nepali before a Muslim! You are a true Nepali!
I am afraid for some people the meaning of true democracy is now finally sinking in. I hope your faith in democracy is not shaken by any religious bigotry. Secularism means that there will be no bias against any religion and that there will be no state (endorsed)religion. In the eyes of the state all religions will be equal. Please remember democracy is not just for you but for all the people.
Foreigners can come to Buddhist Monastory and Bihar. There are some sacred temples where other people (foreigners)should not be allowed even in some places i am not allowed to go in my family AANGAN Temple and look particular god.
Slaughtering cow i am not sure. Most of the population in the world eats cow it should be done in particular place slaughtering house. We can easily buy beef in departmental stores so its not a big deal.
Extremist groups like shiva sena, bajrang dal etc should be banned from Nepal. It doesnt favour our country.
What about eating dog meat or are dogs sacred, I think in some countries people do.
In some cases people it meat of its own kind.
Religion nowadays is replaced by media, politics and business, but we are moving towards the global village where everybody eats what is fashion, the high priests are todays heroes, we are manipulated by the media.
People in india of Nagaland, Manipur eat dog. Many Nepali students who goes to study there tastes dog meat. According to them it is very delicious more than chicken and even expensive.
Yes Tajim, you are a true Nepali.
Talking about secularism, the time will tell how people are going to practise it in Nepal. It seems like people have impression that it gives the freedom to practise for all kind of religion. That is wrong as I believe secularism actually holds all religion in contempt instead of presenting freedom of religion. Take an example of France, look at the controversy it had faced. Are we ready to move to that level ?
We have just got rid of ‘Hindu’ label, there are still many things to be done, then we can proudly claim that Nepal is a secular state. Hope is still alive : )
I dont understand one thing why there is a fuss over this secular thing. Yes we have got it. Now leave that issue. We have lots of things more to do. We have to take nepal to height of liberalisation and economic development. We have to end all conflicts in nepal and start from scratch. its a dunting task and we have to start it right now. We have to show whole world specially indya that nepal is not just land of bahadurs. We are more than that. We need to have start as soon as possible.
Not only shiva sena, but any groups which have strong religious backgrounds, no matter which, should be banned.
Wholeheartedly agree with you again Tajim. Yeah let’s move on. I want to see the Maobadi’s come out with a declaration that they will surrender all their arms as soon as they conclude successful peace talks with the present govt. They must surrender their arms before elections to the CA.
Kirat,
they are not going to surrender their arms.
Their aim is to be the part of Nepal Army and I guess they are working on this instead.
They can be a part of Nepal Army. That’s fine. But before they are integrated into the Nepal Army they must surrender their arms. This must be insisted on. Let them go through a re-education program too so that their loyalties are no longer with Badal but with the Parliament. Any elections to the CA without a Maoists arms surrender will be a farce. You know that.
I’ve be watching this for some time. Personally this king should be removed from his place and set on the low. Killing his family for power know he will be stripped of his power GOOD FOR YOU NEPAL. The Sad part is good kings will come along and have no power even when its just. Killing is not just. I hope that your nation becomes a good and successful one, but war and violence will not solve anything. Freedom of protest, Freedom of speech do come at a price, sometimes you lose both. But make sure you use it for good. Work together don’t follow other countries ways, they just lead to a chaos. Be dependant, find ways to improve your culture. Hindu leave it Hindu, Christian and muslins lol well look at there nations that speaks for itself. Im not Hindu but i admire some of the teachings, make your laws foundation based on honesty, truth, morality, working together. Don’t let corrupt leaders ruin your lives with there false promises, making laws that are more for there benefit then the peoples. They start to show get them out.
The power of democracy isn’t about control its having the power within yourself to make a change for the better, to make way for the future and making it safe for your children and so forth. Some countries fall very very short of this. America may have democracy but do they really, as I’ve lived here born and raised i really don’t have freedom, i would want freedom from governments controlling every action and purchase i do and make. True freedom is about doing good, not freedom to do bad, when you do good and become a good people freedom will flourish. GOOD LUCK NEPAL —LOVE Michael
oye kirat! ubiquitous, omniscient and the great commenter…
ma tero tarka sunera dikka vaisake…with that know all attitude…for once shut your trap. go away from computer, do something real rather than stick your a-ss on the computer and puke those lame arguments…no we won’t miss you…
ugra_pundit, no need to read my comments if you can’t stomach the truth. No one is forcing you mate.
don’t get happy…I am not reading them, it is like ‘aachi’ all around littered by you..so you see I have to hope around so that i don’t step on them…so it is pretty inconvienient….
well ugra_pundit if you can’t counter my logic I guess a ‘pundit’ like you can only resort to the mumbo jumbo crap like your two previous posts. Not happy that Nepal is now secular? Well you can’t have your cake and eat it too! I would rather that you challenge me intellectually than crap from the wrong end like you are.
You say you are ‘pundit’ I am a Kirat. Let’s see what you are made of intellectually. Put up or shut up!
ghengis khan of kirats! do not shove words in my mouth. i haven’t said a word about secularism in Nepal yet. so do not presume my standing on it.
well regarding challenging intellectual, whatever that means I give in. I bow down to your superior intelligence.
such an ego centric cry baby…let’s duel intellectually….rather let’s see whose winnie is bigger yours or mine…
ugra_pundit, this blog is for political/social/cultural discussions on Nepal. Since you are only interested in attacking me as a person I will henceforth ignore you because it seems you are just a petty idiot. So long!
Both you guys stop fighting !! Lets not get into caste hassle just when Nepal has been declared a secular state.
By the way, Tajim, I would want beef in Nepal. Its scientifically proven to be very nutrious. Just because Hindus dont eat them doesnt mean we cannot slaughter beef. I am a Limbu (Angbuhang) who is not even supposed to touch pork. Should I demand that pork should not be slaughtered in Nepal? Or should Rais demand that mutton should not be slaughtered? By the way I love pork and beef. I want both of them in Nepal.
Kirat - why dont you look at my answer to your comment in the post “Recovering From The Jana Andolan Atrocities”. You sure dont know your shit at times, it sounds.
Now you talk sense. I admit all my previous entries were out right stupid and childish. If I were you I would have ignored it the first time and not engaged at all. But no it was your ego: who is the superior of all? If you are intellectually compentent good for you. I have nothing to do with your degree of intelligence rahter I am happy we have intelligent Nepali youth. So tone down a litte, brother, no one is here to show case his/her intelligence and you are not going to get any medal for it.
Nepal becoming a secular state is a good indication that we are finally practising pluraism.
Nepal becoming a secular state does not mean that Hindusim will disappear. Hindusim is a way of life in Nepal. Most of the people are Hindus and will practise Hinduism. This will keep on going forever. There should be no doubt about that.
It was necessary for Nepal to be a secular state as the king derived the power from the religion as a Hindu king–an avatar of Vishnu. The king is a mere mortal like us. He is just a human being not a god.
It is time now for us to translate the sutras and shastras from Sanskrit into vernacular languages so that anyone can read, study &/or interpret religion.
Brahmins alone should not have the power to interpret religion. Every practising Hindu should have the ability to perform rites and interpret religion which will make it even more vibrant.
OK. I might have a big ego…and a short temper. But are you telling me to act dumb? I am only human…I will react to people who attack me, like you did. This is a blog where I can be anynomous and say what I want…I won’t call you stupid in real life even if you were. Is it really necessary for me to pretend here too? Man, that’s a real downer. Anyway peace with you ugra_pundit. I gotta sleep now.
Secular State was the best ever addition in the proclamation. We Limbus are ready to contribute to the national progress and natinal integration. we want to develop our country in full earnst. We are very happy abour the proclamation.
Unnecessary addition about secular state.
Nepal was always secular in practice. The change of name from hindu rastra will only create religious tensions in future.
There are 52 muslim countries arround the world. But now no hindu country. And people are celebrating it? pathetic.
Mark my words. Nepal had no religious conflicts because nepal was hindu country. You will see india like religious riots soon because of this foolish declaration of girija which no one ever asked for.
And why is this website celebrating it? The news says that people celebrated taking away of kings powers. And most of them left dissapointed when the nepal was declared secular country. Is this website paid by missionaries? Why is it mis-representing the news?
For 1st Time in all the history of Nepal, A Real Change is made infavour of the People & they have been given the Sovereign status, which they are. Dream of all Martyrs who fought for the Change has come in someway. But still there’s a long way to go.
Nepal now should head for CA elections in getting people’s mandate to build New and Prosperous Republic of Nepal governed fully by Nepali People.
Wait for the final celebration: its still a long way to go.
If the Maoists obstinate on their demands, we might be heading for another totalitarian regime. The war is not over. The resettlement has not started. The construction of new Nepal is far away.
Maoists have been brilliant in executing their long term strategy. Maos are still collecting money. Maos are recruiting more people. Maos still carry gun.
Lets put the pressure on the Maoists and let them know there will never be a totalitarian regime - be it royal or maoist dictatorship. This was the third movement for the sovereignty of people in the last 50 years. If needed, ther e will still be one more. The only alternative of democracy is more democracy
Its a good move to declare Nepal a secular state.
Secularism is the unseparable part of Democracy which lets the people to practice whatever religion they want.
Theres not any point to get afraid of saying it might create religious tension. Its not that at all.
Truth is it rather helps in strengthening Religious Harmany and Peace among all the communities.
I agree with basanta. What was requirement of this declaration? Being hindu rastra is uniqueness of nepal just like the mount everest, gautam buddha and sita. Girija has made a big mistake by putting this among other good changes. They may actually provide a life line to the king.
Being secular in practice is what matters not in name. No one can take away price of 90% nepalis in one stroke. Let it be an issue in CA if at all it is required.
Why are we copying dhotis so blindly? I wonder if they will provide reservation for muslims tommorow… I wonder if government will pay flight tickets for muslims to go to haj in future. Not even neplese muslims wanted this change ever…
Yes gambhir this step is just to please prachanda and his indian masters. I dont remember anyone in nepal being uncomfortable with nepal being hindu rastra.
It seems missionaries have given some money to girija too. Be prepared for naming your son tom, john, harry.
This is a big mistake. Being secular wont make us developed. Big mistake!
Nepal is was and will be hindu rastra. No copying Dhotis who have more religious tensions than 52 muslim countries and nepal.
I knew girija will do something foolish.
Hey blog.com.np… who has celebrated removing hindu rastra from nature of nepal? People celebrated other significant changes regarding king. Are you being paid by missionaries? Why have you made article look like people were celebrating secularism?
In nepal all religions live together without any tension. There was no requirement at all to make such unnecessary change. Who was unhappy with nepal being hindu rastra? even if someone was unhappy what about the remaining majority of people in nepal.
This is begining of religion based politics in nepal. There will be NJP(nepal janata party) which will promise people to make nepal hindu rastra… kill non-hindus and win votes.. best of luck to girija babu.
Why some guys still afraid of Maoist after they have already shown their full comitments towards MultiParty Democracy formally endorsed by their Central Commite meeting ??
I dönt see a single point to get afraid of them now. Afterall they are the major force of Peoples Movement and awareness they created in society that contributed for this movement for whatever drastic change we have seen now.
Another nepali and Basanta,
your views are out dated. Nepalese people moving with time . What we need is peace in the country. We do not want LANGAUTI of Hindu rashtra and violence in the country. It was the mistake of Biswanath and co. in 1990 whan they drafted the constitution. Where is biswanath now ? He is out dated. It is the new generation who are leading the country.
If we are secular in practice, then whats wröng in formally declaring Nepal a Secular State ??
>>We do not want LANGAUTI of Hindu rashtra and violence in the country.
There will be voilence in country because of this decleration in future. If you cant see that you can keep celebrating. This is odd change that was not required at all.
Can any of u guys answer my above Q ??
>>If we are secular in practice, then whats wröng in formally declaring Nepal a Secular State ??
I say what is wrong if nepal is called hindu country? Who has problem with that? If someone has problem he better go to stinking secular dhoti country india. What about sentiments of 90% nepali people? Prachanda is not the only person whose opinion counts…
I again say it is stupid and unnecessary step to declare nepal secular country.
You are an odd to say that sis, basanta.
You are the one who is trying to create the conflict over secular thing.
To be secular is to respect everyone’s right to religious practice. Its unseparable part of democracy.
So to deny secularism in today’s world is like denying democracy.
Do u deny Democracy, mr. basanta ?
>>Its unseparable part of democracy.
Hindu identity is inseperable part of nepal. I cant believe girija did it without any public debate over it… is he a dictator? what is the hurry to declare nepal like that? to please indian masters or prachanda?
Not only Prachanda but everyone who respects civilian rights in Democracy supports the secular thing.
We have nothing to do whether india is secular or not.
What matters is we being secular for ourselves. For our Democracy to be with full values and norms on civilian liberty.
Being Secular doesnt mean degrading hindu.I am also a Proud Hindu. And I feel very happy with this secular thing.
A true Hindu should not have a problem with Nepal becoming a secular state. It is our Nepali culture which makes us tolerant. Let’s keep this culture alive and let religion be a private matter of faith.
Anyone who starts trouble using religion as an excuse should be imprisoned. Did you know that Islam means peace? But look how the fanatical minority have hijacked the moderate Muslim majority. I fear some religious bigots are already doing this on this board.
If Hindus are the majority in this country ( a majority by how much is debateable as all non-hindu janjatis such as Tamangs, Gurungs etc are also classified as Hindus in official statistics) then why are some of them feeling so insecure? Nepal is mutli-ethnic so what is wrong in being multi-religious? Please stop the needless fear mongering. If they say tomorrow there will be Hindu militants- that is shameful as there has never been any Buddhist/Christian/Muslim militants in Nepal even when Nepal’s official religion was Hinduism. Please do not disrespect Hindus and Hinduism in such a manner.
sakyamuni…
You should understand indian politics then you will know long term implications of this idiotic move. Being officially called hindu rastra has nothing to do with how country runs in practice.
I am more against the way it has been declared. Declaring country secular was no where in the theme of revolution… all of sudden why this change? is it to show that hindus sentiments are not cared in this country now?
People have not asked for it. It has been done to please someone else.
WE MUST NOT ASSUME THAT ‘SECULAR’ MEANS DOWN WITH ALL OUR TRADITIONS AND VALUES. FRIENDS LET US NOT DOMINATE AND SUPRESS ON ANOTHER BUT LET US SERVE ONE ANOTHER IN PURE LOVE. NOW THERE IS NO MORE ‘KO BHANDA KO KAM’ LET US PRACTICE LIBERTY EQUALITY AND FRATERNITY
sakyamuni… Ji,
That was the worst thing to do; counting Janjati as Hindu to show the high percentage of Nepalese Hindu; hiding the fact.
It is pit that it will not happen again.
NEPAL HAS LOST ITS UNIQUENESS
If you want to celebrate it I have nothing to say.
If girija has to please indian masters, then he should have rather strengthened Nepal as a Fundamental Hindu Country. So theres no point of what u said.
Whatever he did, is infavour of all the communities of Nepal either they are in majority or minority.
He did this infavour of Democracy for all,for every single citizen of Secular Nepal, I would rather like to say it boldly.
We all suport this.
To Basanta and gang!
You rejoice ecstatically when KG gave up his powers and you said ‘it’s for democracy’.
You demand all corrupt netas audit their wealth to a last paisa because it’s for democracy’.
You demand jungle dwelling Moabadi give up their arms because it’s for democracy.
You demand RNA be under parliament because it’s for democracy.
So you demand everything from everyone for the sake of democracy, but when it is your turn to give in something for democracy, you sense a conspiracy and a foul play. Secular state is a pre requisite for a healthy democracy, if you want to represent every section of society it has to be a secular state. 90% of population is Hindu well that is debatable and let’s not get into that.
And you suddenly find it frightening that other religious groups of Nepal would rise for their rights. What is wrong in having an equal say in social, political and economical issues of Nepal by minorities as well?
Everyone concerns seems to be they (I don’t who) would start eating cow, common people, give some benefits of doubt. People at minorities are not barbarians; they do have sense of respect for your belief and sensitivity. You are not going to be a lesser Hindu or a bad Hindu just because your nation is no more a Hindu nation. Hinduism is a way of life and it is a personal thing, so do not try to mix it with a politics.
Yes, change is uncertain and at a time scary, but that dose not mean you should deny it and run away from it. For a new dawn everyone has to pass through the darkness of night. But if you choose to blind fold yourself, you are most welcome that you will be lost in your own ignorance.
We must not waste our energy on this religious matter and concentrate on how to transform the military, how to bring Maoists to the mainstream, etc.
A secular state is fair for everybody because every citizen feels respected while celebrationg his/her religion woithout any state dictation.
The US constitution also clearly seperates the church with the state and people are enjoying it.
Gyanendra may try to throw the “Hindu Card” at the ring. We must be very clever of that!
Nepal hasnt lost anything.
Rather it has formally showed its commitments towards democracy.
Nothing to fear, its all fair.
We waited hundreds of years not to be a freaking “KINGDOM”, if we do not secularize the country now, we have not learned shit. You think there will be any religion few generations down the line? You must be dreaming to be fighting for that.
We waited hundreds of years not to be a freaking “KINGDOM”, if we do not secularize the country now, we have not learned $#@^. You think there will be any religion few generations down the line? You must be dreaming to be fighting for that.
Regarding being unique!
Well you can have three balls and be unique.
Well you can have a horn coming out of your head and be unique.
And you can boast you are unique because you have three balls and a horn. Well bask in false sense of honor my friend.
No one in the world gives a second thought on Nepal’s uniqness of being a Hindu country. As if you care jews holy book is called Torah, Jesus was born to vigin Mary, Kabba is in Mecca, and that buddhism comes with a flavor Hinayana, Mahayana, Vajrayana. So do not worry people around the world would not even notice the loss of Nepal’s uniqueness.
Shiva, Brahma, Vishnu (gone ???), Buddha, Allah, Mohammad, Holy Ghost, The Heavenly Father, The Son of God, The God Himself, Jesus the Christ, Ram, Krishna, Laxmi, Sita, Kali, Durga, Taleju, Kumari, Bhairav, Indra, Devi, Hanuman, …………………………………………………………. Wow now everybody can choose their own God but God is God who is this God really??? A big Question is God Light and is Satan Darkness ??
One might say Light is a hanging ball of Nuclear reacter and what is Darkness surrounded by Dark Force and Dark Matter??????
So, no holidays in Dashain & Tihar… or, more holidays(christmas, muslim holdays).
Nepal had to be declared a secular state because the king derived his power from the religion. He and his courtiers have misused Hinduism to justify their actions and existence. Religion gave him the utmost power by being declared a god king (Vishnu’s avatar) as oppossed to being a mere mortal like us.
If we, the people wanted to limit the power of the king, then, we had to cut the umbellical cord, which is religion, that justified his existence. Being declared a secular state is merely a technical maneauvering.
Nepal is & will remain a Hindu country at heart as the majority of the people practise Hinduism. It is our way of life. I see no reason to worry about secularism.
hahha, good question Robin, I think if Dasai and tihar is not labeled holidays, I can see another Jana andolan coming…
Khasi ko masu Jindabad!!!!
Basanta and Gambhir,
Your claim that Nepal was always secular in practice is like a white man claiming that there is no racism in the US. If you want to know the state of racism in the US, then you need to ask a minority. Similarly, ask a non-Hindu or an ethnic Nepali about how they feel about the Hindu Nation.
Although I was surprised by the decision without much public debate, I still think it is the right thing to do. Whether you like it or not, the Royals and Bramhins still derive their position in our Nepali society from religion, This move will empower ethnic and religious minorities making them more confident and giving them more say in the Nepali State.
Having said that I still think this should be tested in the constituent assembly. Also, there are more ethnic minorities than Bramhin and Chettri Hindus in Nepal. So you cannot claim that 90% Nepalis are Hindus.
Hellow,
Good analogy,
“Although I was surprised by the decision without much public debate”
I think thats because it’s coming directly from Prachanda’s demand. And also if I am right, pahad parwat is/was more secular than the cities, and since the cities have the veto power, the pahadi’s and madhesi’s are even more discriminated, with the cities as well being secular means a well rounded playing field.
The question is
-Should we trust Lord Pashupatinath to lead Nepal in the third millenium?
If you think yes, the only option is to go to banakali for tapashya not to preach about religion. Just go to a temple and do a tapasya/kotihom/animal sacrifice.
Otherwise, accept the responisibility and act as a sovereign - which we all are now.
“Nepal becomes a secular state”
R u stupid. This is one of the most stupidest thing I have ever heard. Nepal should be Hindu Country.
Do you think Nepal is a better place now? I am happy power has gone to the people but I am very worried. I ask you?
1. DO YOU THINK SPA HAS POWER NOW,….. Maoist…..duh?
2. DO YOU STONGLY BELEIEVE GIRIJA CAN DO THE JOB?
3. Do you trust this guy? Personally I would take any other politician than GIRJA? What a looser.
I think this is one of saddest moment of my life when the government declared a secular country. I believe in everything the government has proposed. Our country was built on HINDU principal. MARK MY WORD RELIGION does play a big part in my life and I am worried that after 10-15 years our country will be like India where people fight and kill for religion. I WORRY. Secular progressive is NOT a way to go. I ASK you one more time….wasn’t Nepal tolerant to other religion…when it was HINDU country
Here is the problem, like it or not we have to look at India’s history, Secular state….. In 10-25 years MARK MY WORD….a political party will be formed like BJP in INDIA who will have a religious background and will move in that direction…..right now our country has been divided into ethnic lines…race…now its going to be religion.
SAVE NEPAL…..I know everyone is happy about this secular thing but think…think I wish we could get along but think practically this is not a perfect world…..this will be blow out of proportion after 10 -15 years…I am worried about my country…I wish we had more educated and rational politician.
I was reading a comment from one blogger that 90% of the people approve of this secular movement. Those who says that 90% of Nepalese believe in secular country is living in a different world. I am worried about Nepal…I am really worried about Nepal.
Boy did I say MARK MY WORD so many times but I would like to say one more time mark my word.
Congratulations! Welcome in the club of secular states!
Secularism is essential, to let the people feel, that nobody will be looked upon differently because of his culture and religion.
So funny, that the people, who have lamented about Brahmin domination of the state are now shedding tears for the Hindu Kingdom.
If Hinduism needs a king, they shall keep him, but in fact no religion needs a state, as the home of religion is in the heart of the people. Religion belongs to culture and everybody shall be guaranteed the right to live his own religion for him/herself.
Freedom needs more tolerance. It will take time for Nepal to develop this kind of social and cultural tolerance after years of rule of intolerance, empowered by the barrels of the two guns, Nepal has almost been destroyed by.
And one thing is true, this declaration had much more reasons to be joyful too!
AHIMSA knows: Kings are history!
mike ji,
I don’t trust Girija either. However, you may have heard the most stupidest thing, but it is the wisest thing I ever hear in my life, if we love to welcome the peace in Nepal.
You need not worry the present state of Nepal; I ask you to share the joys all Nepalese are rejoicing.
Girija will have to vacate the chair soon to the elected one by the people.
It is easy to declare but it is very hard to implement. The problem is how to bring the Maoists in the mainstream. They are asking PMship already. They say that they were are also the parallel govt and have every right to raise the taxes. It is a rediculous arguement. SPA should not say yes, yes all the time to their demands. Now they should expand the cabinet and make the negotiating team immediately.
Try to invite UN to discuss the process of surveillance of weapons. Do not bring Indian troops for that because it will have negative impact both inside and out side the country particularly in other samall SAARC countries.
With mushrooming Mosques on Nepal & UP border, and very strong ISI presence, it is a matter of time before the country is run over by Slimes and their fellow travellers the commies and also now just see how chrsitain missionaries will pump money into Nepal so that the entire country is converted to Christianity with western values of just sex and drugs being Nepalese culture!!!
I am amazed that still you all are not aware of what is true secularism and what is happening to India due to sickular (secular) ideology!!
Lets see how the governemtn implements all this. Or else, i will have to start an revolution in Nepal, which i am capable of. I am talented.
Mike:
One of your precinct for secularization as bad idea was that “Our country was built on HINDU principal”,
Exactly, Char Jat Chhatis Barna Right?, The king and the clan are gods, while chettris as army and Bahuns as preists serve the king and safeguard their lineage and the rest play merry go round with meagre subsistent based survival.
But it is not about religion, it’s about oppression, the King was a god according to the religion, there is jaat-discrimination, I have experienced that. It is trying to get rid of those things, so just like people in the villages need more attention, likewise the people whose lineage have been blatently discriminated against need more attention.
One one hand you say you are religious and you cannot digest this thing and on the other you give the India Example, no one is going to bar you from being religious, I think even Dasain will still be regarded as a holiday as it is a cultural practice. I dont think we need to compare us to India, Like you said, we are a lot more lenient about religion and Indians are lot more fundamentalists, besides, their infighting between different religion is historical and habitual but I do not think that is the case here in Nepal.
Mike,
While you think about possible scenarios in the future, please also consider a scenario where we continue as Hindu State with Royals and Brahmins deriving power from the religion and dalits and non-Hindus being marginalized.
Please also try to understand whether ethnic minorities and dalits (who outnumber high caste hindus) are happy with the Hindu Nation set up and whether we can stop the blood bath that has claimed 14,000 lives. Also what makes you think that religious uprising is not possible in a Hindu state? We had no Maoist problems for 200 years but suddenly it errupted like a volcano.
I live in a secular country with a strong Christian foundation. However, I think I would be very uncomfortable and leave the country if this was a Christian country (even if it allowed me to practice my religion). Try to put yourself in the footsteps of marginalized non-Hindu Nepali in a Hindu State. In my example I mentioned, I can run back to Nepal. But in a dalit or non-Hindu Nepali’s case in a Hindu Nepal, they have nowhere to run to.
IF THE GOVERNMENT CAN GO TO THE EXTENT THAT it DECLARES COUNTRY AS A SECULAR NATION BY VOTING THROUGH AN OUTDATED PARLIAMENT, I ASK WHY DO WE NEED CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY elections?
WHY CANT IT TAKE ALL THE DECISIONS NOW INSTEAD OF WAITING FOR THE CA ELECTIONS, in the same manner as it did?
AND LET US keep THIS QUESTION for CAElections.
1. Change name of our country
2. Also our flag
‘Hinduism’ was never part of Nepali identity. Most Nepalis were proud Buddhists for a long time. Then some people came over from India and gave incentives to Buddhists to convert to Hinduism and that was it.
The real Nepali religion is animism. You guys like to scream at India but Hinduism is totally an Indian product. It was brought to Nepal by the Bahuns and the Chettris. None of the janjati communities were Hindu before.
And for people like Basanta, please, understand that Hindu-Muslim riots are much more likely in India than in Nepal. India has 150 million Muslims. And understand that the riots invariable happen in North India, in places like Gujarat and Maharastra where Hindus and Muslims have had simmering anger towards each other for longer than your ancestors came to Nepal. There is nothing like that in Nepal.
As for this Mike guy, seems like some do-gooder Westerner with too much time on his hands. Hey fella, don’t worry about Nepal. You don’t understand anything, don’t worry your head. Nepalis can take care of themselves. Sure they’ve been bumps along the way, but look at the world. Which country has had a safe ride? Its all the same, so don’t worry your head unduly on our behalf. Take a couple of aspirins or Tylenols if the head’s hurting too much.
And Mike, no further comments, okay? Unless you’ve got something smart to say. “10-25 years….mark my words..” Look, we’re trying to do something right now, okay. You don’t know whats going to happen in 25 years, and neither do I. Right now, its for the best that Nepal has become secular. Nepal really didn’t need that religious baggage, it doesn’t need that monarchial baggage. It needs a dose of modernity. And some monetary help. If you westerners want to give monetary aid, go ahead, give, but don’t offer advice please. Its easy to give advice. Some advice from me to you Mike. Shut up.
See how easy that was..
NOW THAT WE HAVE CLIPPED THE WINGS OF KING AND ARE ALSO MAKING HIM PAY TAXES.
WHAT DO U SAY ABOUT MAKING ALL THE MINISTERS, POLITICAL LEADERS, MPs & PUBLIC OFFICIALS ALSO PAY THEIR SHARE OF TAXES AND DISCLOSE THEIR PERSONAL WEALTH INFORMATION?
WILL IT HAPPEN? (PEOPLE LIVING IN GLASS HOUSES SHOULD NOT THROW STONES…)
Why, when I type ‘Nepal Army’ am I greeted, first thing with a ‘Royal Nepal Army?’
That has to change immediately.
Manan,
it is not the question of the religion. I am very happy that Nepal is a secular state now, deep inside I feel proud to be part of this nation in some sort of way.
The question is what kind of secular state are we planning to build? In various websites I read this discussion about Hindusm being in danger. Minors are claiming that this gives them an oppurtunity to practise their religion without any fear. For crying out loud we have even seen the Buddhist flags ( or what you call them) in front of Sighadurbar for quite sometime demanding this same thing. It does raise a serious question you know, it makes us realise that were we so fundamental hindus, that we were surpressing the beliefs of other community ? Was religion such a big issue here ? The constitution even though declare Nepal as Hindu state, it had strictly prohibited on the discrimination for other religions. It is the same thing now. I really don’t see anything to cheer about. Granted, we don’t have that label of Hindu nation anymore. Will that solve the problem ? What are the changes you think you are going to see in the future ?
And talking about India, who are we kidding. We are much better than them in this issue. India being the second largest Muslim country in the world still haven’t managed to find it’s true identity. The country where Christians outnumber Sikhs, the former still consider themselves a minority.
The right of secularism shouldn’t be used to practise religions in more extravegant ways but it should be used to limit the religious practises. Do you want to believe in religion, fine ofcourse , keep it within your house, don’t bring it to the work or school. Building of new temples, mosques, monastries should be prohibited. No religion should be practised in public at all. Kumari pratha should be abolished. There are many things we need to do before we start to celebrate the secularism, otherwise we have just change the name on the piece of paper, nothing more.
YOU WANT SOMETHING WISE MANAN WELL HERE:
We only have one life, we only get to be with our loved ones for nothing but a fraction of a moment in time. We only get one chance to sit and make it better for tomorrow and prepare it for our children. To sit and embrace our meaning to teach about the spiritual meaning of life. If u dont know what it is its about enjoying the moment, and enjoying our loved ones, smelling the sweetness of the world. to hold our children hands and walk the world in wonder not in fear. to sit and say today i played with my child hood friend, had a picnic with my family. But instead we fight over who should be in power, who should have control, who should rule over them forgetting you have the power to rule yourselfs. not only that you spend it enslaved to goverments ideal world rather then what the ancients thought. This world is a paradise lost, and its time to regain it. MAKE IT THAT use your potential for making a better world.
Michael, get a grip and get rid of that acid outta your tongue. Who is stopping you to have that spiritual life ? It is not the governments’ ideal world, it is the oppurtunity for people to chose what they please, so what is the big deal ?
We in the united states have too much religious interference in our government today. We have a president who thinks he has a direct line to god. Christian fundamentalism is ruining the united states
Yes It is one positive step further towards the democratic road. Religious and cultural tolerance has been from centuries the Hallmark of Nepalese Identity.
Even after being a Secular Nepal, all various religious existing cultural practices will remain intact as has been the case. It will create another chance to preserve and strenghten indeginous language and socio-cultural practices specially animism and shamanism together with other personnel religious preferences as people choose to practice and adopt.
I agree 100% with Bridohi, now we must focus on first of all disarm Maoists, create a conducive environment under UN inorder to finally CHECK all top brass Maoists leader BARRING THEM from becoming DESPOT COMMUNIST DICTATORS and punish them for their hineous crimes and atrocities which had been committed for the last 10 yrs.
It is ridiculous from Maoists side to demand 50% of Tax and equally obsurd and foolish for Madhav Nepal to support that PLA should be supported by Nepalese Tax Payers Money. The simple and most effective solution is just to assimilate PLAs into Nepalese Army collectively.
Now after curbing the power of King it is time to implement Mallik Report and begin to neck all corrupt past and present political leaders-cadres, MPs, beaurocrats, administrators, judiciary, diplomats, ministers, businessmaen to declare their properties and give back all ill gotton properties and materials back to National Coffer and hence give proper treatment and punishment for thier crimes.
Change the Public Service Commission, make all examinations in English medium except the individual national languages so that people from all tribes, race and gender can compete for Government and Public Posts. The Official languages also must be mostly in English followed by Nepali and translations into other ethnic languages.
All education must be conducted in English medium specially Mathematics, Science from the beginning. Inclusion of various National languages as optional subjects along with Foreign languages like Chinese, Japanese and major other Western languages as per need to Tourism Sectors.
Creation of proper infrastructurs and opportunity locally for possible tourists attractions throughout Nepal researching on local natural and cultural resources.
Provision of stringent rules against Corruption, briberies etc. in both Government and Public Offices at all levels.
These are just few thoughts……… there are so much to be done !!!!!!!!!
Long Live New Nepal and Nepalese Identity
I don’t think bing a seculer country, slaughtering of cows, which most of us don’t eat, will take palce easily in our society. Only some communities in nepal eat beaf and they have been doing it secerately long before. Even the slaughtering of buffalo in a public place is not accepted. So it should not be a big deal if people eat beaf and they dont slaughter it in public, what is the problem. This should not be a major topic of discussion in the present situation. There are more serious things to discuss about. Let’s discuss about the army. What will they do? Will they accept the HOR decleration? What will be the Gyanendra’s next action? what will be the international opinion? When the talks betn.
Nepal government and Maoists take place? what will be the outcome of the talk? When will be CA assembly election? what will be the issues in CA? Is there any chance of army ku?? Don’t we need to be alert for this? what should be the role of general public in present context? There are so many important issues than slaughtering of a cow. Let’s don’t give any chance of relegious conflict in our society. Nepalese are not extremists. whether they are hindus, muslims, buddhists or christians or any other religious group. There are few idiots like shiva sena who tries to rise these foolish talks amongst us. Let’s don’t be their puppet and finish this cow slaughtering talk right now. Let’s discuss about our(nepali citizens) responsibility. Leaders have done something good after very very long. Let’s encourage them. let’s be a true nepali citizen.
“Jai Nepal”
as if i dont take acid anymore so its not on my tongue….and people choose what they please ya the do then down the road your children complain about it. or u do.Decomercy is a illusion fabricated by leaders.
It is funny when people fight fierecly to protect Nepali identity but at the same time advocate to use English as the primary language. What is it all about ?
keven thats so funny i laughed i somewhat agree. and glade you seem not to have aproblem with english your writing in it.
Michael,
shouldn’t you be happy for what you are able to believe ? I just don’t understand how you get this idea about someone prohibiting you from believing in your faith ? Can you please bother to explain ?
I didn’t say anyone is stopping me but goverments say freedom but do u really have freedom over here u purchase a house and the land you pay taxes, u buy a car u pay taxes even if u own it. thats not freedom. U dont pay your taxes your house and car are bye bye i can’t go anywere in this world that i can excape goverments oppression. I am either forced to believe in what they set into motion, or die or be put in prision.
Well this discussion is way outta my league I guess, but still I believe what you pay, you will get back. It’s a system which works and you really can’t beat it.
It nice to declare Nepal as a scular nation. However, it’s not a victory over hindus. It’s a chance to intensify the brotherhood between all religions. If the people other than hidu treat it as if they grabbed the power from hindus then there will be another revolt in the country and the result will again be REGRESSION.
This moment I would like to quote Neil Armstrong.
“A small step but a giant leap”
Let us unite as Nepali. This caste/religion system has divided us for years. It is time to build our nation. Let us join hands in hands and forget our bitter past. Lets be progressive. Lets be optimistic (rather than seeding crapy ideas like Shiva Sena and alike).
I am very happy that now our country is a secular nation. It is indeed a great leap for Nepali community.
Bir Sahid haru Amar Rahun
Loktantra jindabad
yeh….sant osh…i agree with you…..if nepal is to be knwn as hindu kingdom..then no..why can’t ppl’ from other religion en ter pashupa tinath?!….all religions shud be equal….thats a descrimination….!!
Most intelligent posters seem to be ok with the secular state declaration. I guess there will always be some people who find it difficult to be secular-religious bigotry exists in Nepal too.
Funny part is Prithivi Narayan Shah is taking the Red Flag.
In my view, just reading a paper is nothing. If it gets implemented, then it is good. But not all decisions are made with careful discussion.
A mob in the street has more power than these stupid politicians….the mob says …change the country’s name..and it will be done ?.its a pity…
It is one sided and hurried. Like some people said….making the country secular is gonna raise hell of problems..
..the recent decision by the indian govt to reserve 50% of seats to backward classes for govt jobs and studies in technical colleges is making hard-working students and youth fight in a do or die situation.
Well all religions have their positive and negative aspects.
The cow is a sacred animal to Hindus and that should be respected. Hey let us not sensationalize the issue of the cow to create doubts or divisions in peoples minds. This is how rumours get started…(Remember Hritik Roshan)
We are at crossroads here in Nepal. We have much more important issues to look at which is peace and stability.
It is dissatisfactory that Nepal has been declared secular state without any discussion. However, Nepal will always be a Hindu Samskritik Rastra though it won’t be technically. With the great philosophical tradition of Vedic culture, Nepal will emerge even significantly as Hindu center. It will come with its real glory, which was under shadow due to melting of Hinduism and monarchy in same pot.
Another thing, the proclamations aims to establish ceremonial monarchy in Nepal in real sense. Maoists and other short-sighted persons/groups will try to vandalize it, but we are firmly standing in favor of ceremonial monarchy.
Democrat Nepali
Prakashji,
Give Thekka to bharat keshar Singh and his followers to save hinduism. he is better person for that. I do not know where he is now.
Regarding ceremonial king i agree with you. The massacre of whole family of king Birendra raises doubts, because after that incident, how KG tried to take power from the people. Now I have suspicion that royal massacre was pre-planned.
Who dare to slaughter Cow openly!
All nepalease must be aware of the fact that COW is our national animal!!
Hinduism is not thekka of Bharat keshar or like. THere were Yogi Narahari Nath and Pandit Narayan Pokharel too. Pandit jee was killed by brutal Maoists. Let’s expell bharat keshar and like form hindu federation. Let’s restore people like yogi jee and pandit jee in the leadership of hindu federation. Spirituality is most important factor even in post-industrial society. It has been proved. Nepal’s vedic inheritance is something that makes us victorious over millions and millions years coming.
There was no need to declare country secular. Nepal is was and will be hindu rastra.
Saudi arabia is muslim country. Vatican is christian country. Mecca is to muslims, vatican is to christians what nepal is to hindus.
Hindus are third largest religion in world.
What is done is done. Personally I did’nt see any reason to pronounce Nepal a secular state. We have always been a safe haven and oasis for all religions. I see it as the removal of something unique. Further, I very much doubt that this will help Nepal get closer together, I think the opposssite will happen. Village people are the ones who are very conservative about these things. This will divide the country more.
I also noticed Mr. Hridesh Tripathi from Satbhavana party speaking in Hindi in parliament. Well I think this itself is also part of being secular, and like I said what is done is done. However, this should mean that we should be allowed to speak in any of our languages in parliament, and especially English, because many of our urbanites let’s face it have English medium education, and it should in no way be seen as a foreign language, it is a universal language and even the Indians have it as one of their key languages in and out of parliament. Look around us, we have everything written in Nepali but also English (sign boards, notices, advertisments, this blog site etc. etc.). So English should be given due recognition as a language to be used as well. I think this is a very important issue as Nepal can truly be understood by the world better and this would only benefit our economy and image.
sl;
Finally good to see a sensible person speaking in middle of all bhedas who are just happy because a useless decleration was made in between.
Answer me this since nepal is secular now…
1. Will you allow cow slaughter?
2. Will you allow muslims to go to parliament with their own cap? What will you say if they insist on not wearing dhaka topi or daura suruwal because it is related to neplese hinduism?
3. Will you allow remove the picture of pashupati nath temple from each and every note?
4. All coins of nepal have some temple, trishul sign etc. Will you change that?
5. Will you give national holiday for id? for christmas?
6. Will you change official calender to christian calendar followed in most of the countries?
And many more… nepal is going to lose its unique cultural place in world.
Even the United Kingdom is not a secular country. Now we are. If we take it in the correct spirit it is alright, if not we may end up with muslims saying that they will want to practice their muslim laws which will be very different from our Nepali laws. How do we tackle that? The British are not secular so when the muslims there said that muslim law should be enforced for muslims, the govt. said take a hike we are not a secular state.
When the Dalai Lama wants to visit what do we tell him? Do we piss China off now that it is a secular state? People ave already mentioned the slaughter of cows, but have a look at the other side, how about the slaughter of pigs? We will also definitely have an influx of misssionaries and evangelists coming in to convert people into Chritianity, who knows by the end of all this we could end up a majority nation of Christians?
I like the idea though of sl that English has to be a national language. We discuss with it here, we have it on our TV and everywhere. I do believe this will help our nation a great deal in this day and age of globalisation.
Ck2.
Exactly dear friend. People have to understand that hinduism in nepal needs reform to make society better. This declaration is not well thought out. Most country with high religious intolerance are secular countries. There are reasons why it is so.
Hinduism needs reform but declaring secular will only deform it. People who are unsatisfied will opt for other religions rather than making their religion better.
It took missionaries 400 years to convert whole brazil into christian country. With present day information technology it will take much less time for nepal. Also note that there are no anacondas here to stop missionaries.
Just to take revenge to Bharat kishori Singh and the king, the SPA declare secular state which is totally nonsense. It is divinding the nation not uniting. Even in the name of Hindu country, people were free to respect their gods and culture except cow is not allowed to slaughter. The stupidity of SPA will bring long term effect and drastic change in our culture. The globalisation doesnot mean to change the culture politically. I think people will not tolerate for emphasising unnecessary things just to become popular infront of certain sector. This will bring differences among the united people once people start to slaughter cow.
If Girija doesnot give damn to the god doesnot mean people will not give. If Madhav doesnot obey the hindu culture even in the death of his mother doesnot meand people follow him. Even in the developed country and educated person go to the church and follow their tradition. This is totally mess…..decision…
Lets change the flag of nepal. It has no green color for muslims, no white color for christians… It is totally hindu flag… its shape is also like the hindu flags used in temples and used by people in mahabharat time.
Lets make a green, red, white flag like india.
Now the television news anchor should not say ‘namaste’ at end of news. He should say ‘god bless u, saaalam, namaste’.
The SPA leaders have cheated us, those who like Nepal to be “Hindu Rastra.” We took part in people’s movement and chanted agains the king’s autocracy. At that time we were not denouncing our hindu identity. In fact, we had seen hinduism and the king just two matters. But the leaders treated as if hindu dharma is only and only associated with the king. So they took in granted that the defeat of the king’s autocracy is the defeat of hindu identity of the country. But they are wrong. Nepal’s hindu identity is much more inherent than they can perceive. They used their power and removed this identity technically, but the hindu philosophy will leap forward so tremendously that the world will be overwhelmed.
