General Strike Day IX Updates

Seven Party Alliance (SPA) vows to continue the people’s movement more strongly amidst call from the King for dialogue

By UWB! Team

King Gyanendra called the political parties for dialogue in his New Year’s message but the leaders of the various political parties called it ‘old wine in old bottle’ claiming that the call keep ‘no meaning’ to the ongoing people’s movement.

Girija Prasad Koirala, as seen on Kantipur Television, said the movement would continue until the king returns the rights of the citizens. “I have told the King in past that there are two rivers flowing parallel – one of democratic force and the other of republic,” he told the television. “And the situation today is that they are more likely to converge.”

He said the people would decide everything now. He also added that the people, even ministers, suppressing the movement would not be spared. The power of public pressure.

Leaders of other parties too called the King’s call ‘meaningless’. And it looks like after two days of almost normal life for the people of capital, the movement would be more violent again.

Although it looked like the movement has lost the momentum, it hasn’t. Professionals and other organizations continued their protest, while thousands of people rallied in Kiritipur and other region of the country. In Chitwan, thousands participated in the funeral of the Tulsi Chhetri, the woman killed during the movement.

Meanwhile, the fund created to help the hospital to make available the free treatment to the injured demonstrators, more than 35 lakhs has been collected. People from around the country are donating for the fund and it would certainly be bigger in coming days. UWB! requests all readers to donate for the fund.

    peoples of all free spirit,

You are doing good. But you must to realise that if you are really true democrat, then the path is the only way for you. Only imperialist democracy will not free you. You need absolute democracy for peoples free from all feudal elements. All brother and sister with revelutionary spirit which we see, fight for absolute democracy.

    hey Kirat,
    it’s me the aadibasi girl.
i am not very good with the data; i want to go more qualitative than quantitative..But i have read and watched maobadi leaders like mahara, baburam, and prachanda..and i have felt an aura ,a deep concern and energy in them . (Please donot mistake me for any maoist.. as i am a person who believes on non-violence, liberty and diversity).
Only people like kamal thapa(muso gunda), srish, sachhit, bharat keshar (date expired samanti buddas) can be under kg’s gang.
Please please never say that king gyanendra is smart.
He seems now successful, not because that he is sth smart.. he is ‘dhurta’ and too ‘dussahasi’ (that’s a diff thing).
He today seems successful because of our people’s hindu daas manobritti, our age-old politics of centralization, ‘chakaribaz’ and ‘shadyantra’.
he is too short sighted, morally insane ( all autocratic murderers are insane, after all)
person who has benefitted from our nation’s ill fated history and tradition .
otherwise he is as insane and stupid as his supporters.

Well kirat some of what you say are truth. but dont u think we ought to give the king a chance as well? we have trusted the political parties for too long, nearly 12 years but where are we now? listed on the poorest countries of the world. if the king has said he will bring democracy in 3 years dont we think we could wait for that long. The maiost are a problem i agree, but has the political power done anything for it when it was their rule? have u heard of a nepali proverb ” Aula dina dudolo nilne” you give the maiost some time to give peace but then it ultimately is void. Whoever comes in rule, just want a peaceful country, where people can actually say there is peace in my country
