General Strike Day VIII Updates

Government instruct Cable Operators to stop airing Kantipur Television as the mobile services resumed

By UWB! Team

[7:00PM] State Minister for Communication Shrish Shamsher Rana called all cable operators for a meeting and asked them not to air Kantipur Television through their cable. Most of the cable operators have already stopped airing the channel.

Meanwhile, Nepal Sports Journalists Forum (NSJF) has issued a press release demanding immediate restoration of press freedom and expressing solidarity with the protest programs of Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ). NSJF has also condemned government decision to use the stadium and covered hall as the detention center and has asked to stop politicizing sports sector.

[6:30 PM] Traffic in the valley is almost normal.

This afternoon, a mass meeting was held at Gongabu where thousands of people participated. The state stationed a sizeable number of security force (I counted three armed police trucks, two army trucks, an armour vehicle and half-a-dozen mini-TATA used by policemen), but they didn’t intervene.

Nepali Congress’ Ram Sharan Mahat, Nepali Congress (Democratic)’s Prakash Man Singh and UML’s Yogesh Bhattarai were among those who addressed the meeting.

Meanwhile, the mobile serivices of Nepal Telecom resumed services from this afternoon. Both post-paid and pre-paid mobiles started working. However, the mobile service of Mero Mobile, a private company, hasn’t resumed yet.

At Pulchowk, students of Engineering Institute disrupted the traffic for more than an hour.

Without closing traffic and business, a few places of the capital and many places outside the capital is continuing general strike for Day Eight

[10:00 AM] Yesterday, although the traffic in Bhaktapur was almost nil, Kathmandu roads were different. There were lots of private vehicles, especially motorbikes, taxis and a few tempos and microbuses and very few buses were seen plying on the roads.

Today, traffic in Bhaktapur has also increased during the morning. At Kaushaltar, demonstrators rallied demanding democray and end of autocratic rule.

It looked like Kaushaltar has became the happening place in Bhaktapur as more than a hundred policemen stationed at the place and before the rally began, both DSP of the district were there.

Police didn’t intervene on the rally but didn’t allow the people to continue the sit-in program as of yesterday.

At 9:30AM, I heard that people burnt a vehicle at Surya Binayak, but this report is yet to be confirmed. The vehicles decreased a lot at around 10:00AM.

During the rally, I saw a vehicle of a public enterprises with four plaincloth soldiers in it. They were holding guns under their jackets and only a part of it was visible.

    Kirat,
I read what you have to say of Kanak Dixit. He may write a good line or two but don’t be easily swayed by people like him. There all sorts of allegations against this character. One being that Girija has made a deal with him that if he through his powerful media supports his movement, he will be given the foreign minister portfolio in due time. Which is fine, but it should not be a give and take business deal for democracy.
Also, remember in the past he was vehemently opposed to the Arun dam project, and supported the dam in Kali Gandaki, experts said both were fine and a must for the nation. But he went against one for “environmental reasons” and not against the other, because the Kali Gandaki project was being done through the company represented by Julia Chiang Blochs husband Stephen Bloch, and this is the deal where Mr. Deuba and Mr. Dixit were alleged to have beneffitted. Apparently, in the final deal when Deuba was home minister, Mr. Bloch hiked up the price of the project, and USD 600 million was made from the deal.
There are many snakes out there my friend. Dont see everything with simple eyes.

    Hey scoop,

Thanks for the info. I understand that Mr. Dixit is not as holy as he makes himself out to be. But then again what you have said against him has never been substantiated. Remember this is a hallai, halla ko desh. We Nepalis do love to put our fellow Nepalis down. Even then a good friend of mine was once quite close to Mr. Dixit and he did tell me that Mr. Dixit the public figure is quite different from Mr. Dixit the real person.

Still hats off to Mr. Dixit for his stand against this fascist state. I would still cast my vote for him over Girija, Deuba etc.

    Kirat,
What the people of Nepal have said against the likes of Girija and the corruption of their rule also has never been substantiated in any court of law, it is all just allegations. These are powerful people we are talking about, with control over media and other institutions.
But on the positive side, I guess an educated and smart corrupt bugger is better than an uneducated corrupt fool.

    scoop,

You are right? Just thinking aloud-why did the king never punish Girija in a proper court of law during the last 14 months. Everyone knows Girija is corrupt, a proper trial would have set a great precedence.

I suspect the King wants idiots like Girija leading the SPA, easier for him to tackle and hold on to power.

    Mero Desh

No body has to be a fan of Girija to follow him. No body of the six parties were or are fan of him but they follow him because he is tallest of all political leaders in Nepal. Remember king Tribhuvan had no money to pay Zurich hospital bill but his grandson is multi-multi billioner. Krishna Prasad Koirala, father of Girija Prasad Koirala, had hundreds of Bighas of land before he started democratic struggle against Rana regime but Girija has a few bighas and even a proper house to live in. He fought whole of his life for democracy, for people’s right against every autocratic rule. He made mistakes like any person but he is He because of his sacrifice. People can vilify him as he is not a royalty but a commoner like you and me. If you are so much for a saintly person in politics, will you indicate just one taller than Girija to follow by the people?

please people would you just stop discussing about how chor is girija or the leaders…since i have started something in this blog and since there has been discussion on every news that makes headlines, there is always the same old thing he/she is chor or whatever…well who has not agreed…so then what do u think we should do if they are chor…let g shah rule…comon you darbaria pyscos and my loktantra badi frens….these chors can easily escape if this king rules…if these chors don’t think aandolan can’t do anything they will goto this g shah and we will know what he will do….he will welcome them at least for now….and these chors will rule us again coz they will have the blessing of the king, army, police….so how can we not let these chors rule us again in such a shit way….it’s by doing aandolan with such tenacity that the likes of g shah and grija koirala won’t be able to rule us like nero….or markos…….why don’t u understand the basic fact…these leaders will be the same if g shah is still here and look at that merciless beast at the throne…he gave no value to people’s aandolan….he is doing what he thinks is right and now it’s upto us to do what we think is right….and if we can’t understand the rythem and cycle of the history then we are just mere bystanders of this great time……..and if we really are human beings…we can’t stand this way forever looking at the madness of one man…..

proud2bnepali, Fine comment, whatever young guys like us supposed to have creative ideas like ‘Mero Desh’ said up (do it or not is self intention) and everything is possible if we are really confident. And also i don’t think we have to be like UK or France, let us not to go far like, you know all we have been talking about SPA and the KING ,that is totally nonsense to me because all the time same descussion and end with the no scope. And begin the same thing again. We must think differences even not like SPA, not like KING. Also i don’t like to critisize SPA and the king because I think, our future plan is not yet set up after king or even to remove these Seven Party Alliance (SPA). We are longing for the New Generations to come up to hold this country. We should have separate clever ideas more the those old folks. I’ve my few quatations.

What i’m thinking and what i would like to say is we young guys should establish NEW PEOPLE’S PARTY for the another hope to the entire Nepalese people. We no need to using force to ban this SPA, I’ve simple ideas to fall them down. Just let you look at the basic politics of Singapore. I don’t mean that the Singapore had single party,in spite of having opposite party they never get to coming up against late PM Lee Kuan. As we can also take a piece of example like Singapore did. We can claim them (SPA) all of their past evil deeds and corruptions, yes of course should be confiscated and let them busy in the court (but i’m worry about that nepalese law never use in proper sense, it is even having always dead) and later on i’m sure the Parties budget goes down….
And our turn, that was my simple idea which i was thinking for a long time ago.Easy to say but of course if we united and generocity for the entire Nepalese…..faster development wid one government has moral conscience.
    oh NO but say yes!
